We are 2 former homeschoolers who met at our local library’s story time when our children were babies. We share a love for literature, art, education, nature, and history. We started 5 Acre Woods Homeschool Enrichment the fall of 2021 and have created a vibrant community of children who are curious, engaged, and kind.

With all the amazing benefits of homeschooling, it can be challenging to provide activities that require a larger group. Theater, singing, art, and discussions can be more motivating and fun to do with friends. We were looking for ways to make these activities engaging for our own children, but also wanted to involve others and create a community of learners.

Our culture of learners are kind, empathetic, excited to learn, positive, creative, playful and community oriented. Additionally, the home atmosphere is a warm, safe place to explore new ideas, exercise creativity and ask questions. We focus on history, science, literature, and geography with frequent art and theater projects sprinkled throughout to integrate new ideas.

We do take applications and periodically have openings in our program.

Amy Bakke majored in English, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts. She has worked with a wide range of children ages 0-18. She worked at the Children’s Ark as a residential treatment counselor where she gained experience with at risk youth for almost a decade. Amy has been working with kids for over 20 years, but her passion for education is in hands on activity/play based learning. Her favorite subjects to teach are Literature, History, Art and Geography.

She married a man from the Netherlands and faced a choice of where they would live. While there were many amazing opportunities and supportive family in the Netherlands, ultimately they chose to live in the U.S. so that they could homeschool, as it is not legal in the Netherlands. Amy always knew she wanted to homeschool and so the choice was easy. She has 3 children ages 3, 3, and 9.

Adriana Carlson has a degree in photo journalism and filmmaking. As an educator, she is inspired by Charlotte Mason and Rudulph Steiner. She teaches at 5 Acre Woods and Real Red Riding Hoods, a local forest school. She also organizes a traveling micro school that has visited: Peru, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Guatemala, and Costa Rica.

She loves to share her passion for nature, storytelling, filmmaking, history, and geography. She lives in Palmer Lake with her family and has 3 children ages 8, 11, and 13. She has been homeschooling for 8 years.
